Tour 3 (3 Days)

Marrakech > High Atlas > Ouarzazate > Draà Valley > Zagora > Tamegroute > Mhamid > Erg Chigaga > Lac Iriki > Tazenakht

Day 1

The journey leads us over the High Atlas and the 2260m high Tizi-n-Tichka Pass with an overwhelming view. The steep road lined with oak forests and walnut trees leads past the clay and stone houses of the Berber villages and mountain streams. When the pass is crossed, the steep road descends into an almost moonlike landscape of the Antiatlas and we reach our first destination, Ait Benhaddou a Kasbah built of mud bricks. Protected as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, it is considered to be the most beautiful and famous Kasbah in Morocco. It even served as a backdrop for films such as “Lawrence of Arabia”, “Jesus of Nazareth” or “Gladiator”. After the sightseeing, lunch and transfer to the Draà Valley. From the waters of the High Atlas, a long drawn oasis, the Draà Valley, has been formed, extending from Ouarzazate to Mhamid. The most beautiful part of the oasis with millions of date palm trees stretches from Agdz to Zagora. From Agdz on we drive to Tamnougalt, here you can visit an old Kasbah and we make an excursion to the date palms oasis. We’ll take dinner and spend the night in a riad typical of the region.

Day 2

After breakfast on the terrace of our riad we head south to the Oasis of the Draà Valley. The journey leads us along the dunes of Tinfou to Mhamid, once a lonely oasis and an important stage on the old caravan routes. The journey continues through the desert, past Zagora, Tamegroute (Optionally you can visit a pottery workshop where you can see the impressive pottery craft in action) caravan routes. From Mhamid we head into the desert. In an adventurous ride in the jeep on the desert tracks and between the dunes of the Sahara after about 50 km we arrive at the sacred oasis Iriki, where we get our lunch prepared in the open air. When the opportunity arises, we stop at a nomad family to drink tea and then continue to the dunes of Erg Chigaga, which stretch for about 40 km. The golden dunes reach a height of 300 m and our bivouac is located in the middle of the dunes. Don’t miss the opportunity to sandboard on the dunes or take a dromedary for a ride into the sunset. Enjoy the hospitality of the nomads, with the famous mint tea, the “whiskey berbère” as a welcome gift. You’ll take dinner and after a romantic camp fire the night will be spent in a desert bivouac.

Day 3

After breakfast, we continue our journey on the old Paris-Dakar slope and reach the Lac Iriki, a salt lake, which has for the most part dried up for many years only to wake up for a while in times of increased rainfall. Our way leads us to the fossil mountain, where you can collect a few smaller fossils as a souvenir. We leave the desert and arrive at Tazenakht. After lunch we’ll head for Marrakech where we’ll arrive in the evening.
